Watching Orchestra

Not-really a while ago, I finally have time to complete my long-awaited wishlist: watching (real) orchestra. Well, actually I’ve watched orchestra before, but it was held in an outdoor public space, so I’m not quite satisfied with the audio quality. So this time, I consider myself lucky to get a ticket on an orchestra performance held in auditorium specially made for joyful musical experience.
When I arrived, my phone showed that it was currently 5:15 PM, signaling my need to hurry because the show started at 5 PM. After I parked my motorcycle, I quickened my steps, rushing to the auditorium which was a little bit far from where I had parked. Slightly out of breath, I managed to talk to the receptionist to check in for my show reservation. She responded with a small smile, indicating for me to wait for a while. Shortly after, a petite lady approached me and guided me to my seat. As I moved through the crowd, I noticed that my surroundings were filled with elegantly dressed people, eagerly anticipating the classical music performance that awaited us.

A moments passed when suddenly the crowd’s voices turned into silence. The lighting began to dim, focusing on an eighty-year-old man who slowly walked towards the center of the stage, assisted by two violinist who supports him with grasping his hand. After reaching the podium, he passionately approach the microphone, begin talking about the introduction of the music that will be performed by the orchestra. In his speech, he also talks about his ideology and works in music industry, such as arranging an annual orchestra concert in national monument, also his plan to make his orchestra could perform in an classical tour across the globe.
“Music should be universal. I am working with both my hand to make it accessible to all, regardless of religion, economic status, or age. I am working to make Indonesian orchestra will be as good as foreign orchestra so all Indonesian’s has access to this beautiful music. Please help us.”
While hearing him talking, somehow in my mind I feel envy. An eighty-something years old man, which even cannot walks by himself, has such a passion which could lead a whole organization to arrange a stunning performance. Suddenly, I remember an old concept I read a while ago; Just Cause. In order to be happy, we need a sense of purpose or meaning. The purpose should be an ideal world we thrive for, a compelling vision of the future that does not yet exist, but so meaningful that could move people towards the same belief, working hard and sacrificing the necessary resources we have in order to be closer to those future we dreamt. It’s the infinite game, where the goal cannot be measured by number, but the goal is to keep playing until we are close enough to those condition we thrive for.
I begun to question myself, when I reached his age later on, could I have such passion, just like him? Can I have those vision, that could bring a bunch of Indonesian musician to perform for free, in order to make music accessible? Can I have those passion, same passion that could make a lot of music performer train themself so hard that could make them invited on a global tour in europe and america? Can I have those purpose, where could be the reason to wake up every morning, passionately”.

Before my reveries are drifted too deep, a gentle piano sound came into my ears. The show has begun.
p.s. thank you for waiting!
